Belize’s Tourism Sector on the Path to Recovery Post-COVID-19

Belize’s tourism sector continues to rebound after being brought to its knees by the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2020, tourism arrivals by air, sea, and land were put at a standstill, as the country’s borders were closed for months. While Belize is now recovering from the pandemic’s onslaught, areas like tourism are yet to return to pre-pandemic levels. Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Tourism, Nicole Solano appeared on the Galen Hour and spoke about the work ahead to revitalize the industry and its various sectors.

Nicole Solano, CEO, Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations: “We’re not a 100%  back to pre pandemic levels yet and so when we look at where we are today we look at 2019 numbers, 2019 is the year that we do our comparisons to so year to date if you look at January to September, October numbers aren’t in yet October just finished. If you compare January to September in 2019 and January to September 2023 we’re about 92% in our overnight sector. So that means that travelers that come in and stay overnight we’re almost at the same number of arrivals as we were in 2019 and we expect that come the end of the year we should be close if not reach those numbers. As a matter of fact September was the month that we saw back to 100% of 2019. So those indicators are good. In cruise we’re a little bit behind. If you look at the same number of months January to September we’re about 76%. We do not believe that we will reach 100% by the end of this year but for both overnight and cruise October, November usually it’s around Thanksgiving going into the Christmas season and New Years that’s when we consider our high season so we do expect things to pick up again and as go into the busier months of the year we expect to see those numbers go up.”
