A ceremony to kick off the Solid Waste Recycling Project was held this afternoon in Belmopan. The project is a collaboration between the Japanese International Cooperation Agency and the Belize City Council. The launch was held at Independence Park where we caught up with Belmopan Mayor Sheran Sharon Palacio.
Sheran “Sharon” Palacio, Mayor of Belmopan City: “Today is a very historic day when a dream is coming true with our recycling project and it was all initiated by JICA and of course ourselves always trying to keep this wonderful city clean and in the person of Mr.Robert Matus he was the person who could have pursued an online training specifically to be able to participate in this recycling opportunity. So today is the day that we all came together as you can see we had different schools represented and it is to show how serious we are and it’s gonna be a continuity as these students here today from St. Michael’s school and the Belmopan Comprehensive School we’ve declared them ambassadors to our sanitation project something that we really need because when we’re speaking about sanitation as you can see around Belmopan a lot of times people just drop their plastics all over the place so we will be working on an attitudinal change to ensure that we get back Belmopan to what it once was. So my particular interest in this project number one is to ensure that we keep our beautiful city clean, number two to be able to participate in this recycling project and the drums as you saw there were some drums that JICA and City Council labeled and the idea is to begin to separate garbage.”
