With recent concerns being vented by residents in Belmopan, a public meeting was held last night, led by Belmopan Mayor, Khalid Belisle. Our Cayo Correspondent Fem Cruz has the story.
Love News spoke to Mayor Khalid Belisle who shared with us some of those concerns brought up by the residents of Belmopan.
Khalid Belilse, Mayor of Belmopan City: “Yes I would just want to start off by thanking the few dozen residents that actually took the time out this evening to come and join us for this town hall meeting. We had a very broad and wide ranging discussion covering a multitude of issues, traffic, land management, urban planning, safety and security and it was good positive constructive feedback and criticism in addition to good suggestions coming from the residents of this fair city of ours. I could never have imagined that the meeting would have went so well. It’s clear to me that we have a lot of well meaning and invested residents in the city of Belmopan and I am eternally grateful to them for having actually taken the time and put on record their interest in the development of our beloved city.”
Belmopan Resident: “One of my main concerns had to do with getting a proper market area for Belmopan, I also had the concern of our walkways that are very much in need of repairs. My third concern was the parking in the market area where I believe that there’s a need for more parking space for the private citizens and my next concern had to do with saying thank you to the mayor for changing their minds on giving permission for the gas station to be built in front of the school.”
Arthur Saldivar, Attorney: “Certainly I have had the occasion to see where the community has been going down the wrong path, we have basically not been keeping up to what we were in the original concept of what Belmopan was supposed to be. Crime and violence is out of control, we’ve had a proliferation of bars and these bars are being established in communities, residential areas and as a result of that we have residents being inconvenienced because it’s a nuisance and we have crime on the uptick as a result of it so it was necessary for me to come and voice that concern. Outside of that we have the situation where the youth in Belmopan are not being served, not being given adequate opportunity for positive recreation in the city. This particular building where we are right now is actually going to waste, we’re not having it be utilized and we wanted to see it as youth center where children can come and they’ll be engaged in positive activities.”
