The Belmopan city council has provided funds to ten youth groups to assist in the fight against climate change. In June, the council launched the Youth Climate Action Fund Project after being handed one hundred thousand dollars from Bloomberg Philanthropies, an NGO based in the United States. Love News spoke to Belmopan Mayor Pablo Cawich who told us about some of the approved plans.

Pablo Cawich, Belmopan Mayor: “Yesterday I attended another function for Raquell Art who was also another recipient of the fund and they have repurposed materials as part of art. So there are different projects for the different groups. We have in the case of I think UB they had a reforesting initiative for the 10cents Creek. We have other agencies, other recipients that also had awareness campaigns. So the results of the fund and the investment is in different aspects of climate change.”
Cawich further explained that a committee reviewed the different applications for accuracy so that the teams be supported over the next year.
Pablo Cawich, Belmopan Mayor: “The work was initially started by Mayor Palacio. She was the one who actually started contact with the foundation and afterwards our administration came in and that is when the program actually launched, trainings began and documentation and assessments started for us to ensure that we qualify and that we have all the documentation and processes in order.”
Cawich encouraged other youth groups to join existing projects and begin preparation for new project submissions.
