Belmopan City Council Faces Power Struggle: Acting Mayor Appointment Declared Null and Void

Belmopan City Council Faces Power Struggle: Acting Mayor Appointment Declared Null and Void

Tonight, there is a power struggle at the Belmopan City Council after Mayor Sharon Palacio appointed an acting Mayor without consulting the council. Over the weekend, Palacio departed the country and nominated councilor Hope Amadi as acting mayor. But today, his brief stint as the head of Belmopan’s City Hall ended abruptly. The Department of Local Government says that contrary to Palacio’s decision, put out by her office on social media, the mayor has no power to appoint an acting mayor. The ministry says that based on Section ten-two of the Belmopan City Council Act, Councillor Sanie Cal is the duly elected Deputy Mayor of the Council. The ministry added that any purported appointment of any councilor outside of the provisions of the Belmopan City Council Act is null and void.
