Belmopan crime at an all time high

While the Police Department boasts about crime numbers being lower, one particular region that has been traumatized due to a spike in crime is out west. The western region of Belize has seen a lot of homicides in the last few months. Just recently, in September, three people were murdered within one weekend. Commissioner Williams has recognized the one hundred percent increase of major crimes, particularly in Belmopan.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Western region has an increase of major crime compared to the same time last year and they also have a 100% increase in murder compared to last year so for me that is bad and we have to do something to address it. You’d know that in San Martin or Maya Mopan we had over one weekend three murders; the one with the young lady who was taken and raped or we believe she was raped and subsequently murdered, and then we have the double murder where the two individuals shot and killed two other persons in Maya Mopan or Salvapan, then in San Ignacio we have where there was a flare up in Santa Elena that resulted in the death of Ms Ophelia and then we have one Mr.Flores I think who was also killed. So that is where they Cayo district is. The outskirts of Belmopan as well as Santa Elena is what is accounting for the mass of those murders and so we have to now put things in place. We have addressed to some extent the issue in Salvapan or around Belmopan as well as in San Ignacio we have since seen a reduction but we need to ensure that we put together a strategy that will be long term to be able to address this issue that we don’t see it manifest itself again.”

Compol once again noted that many of the crimes begin with the consumption of alcohol. We will have more on that later on in the news.
