Belmopan Land Dispute Ventilated

The former UDP Belmopan City Council is being chastised for de-reserving a piece of land and selling it to former UDP Health Minister Pablo Marin. The plot of land is near the Cohune Walk area and according to Belmopan Area Representative, Oscar Mira, the land that was sold to Marin is actually a road! Mira explains

Oscar Mira, Minister of State, Ministry of National Defence and Border Security: “This part of the Boulevard was de-reserved and it was being offered for sale. At the time it was hard getting information but as soon as we got in government in November 2020 we got a copy of all those that got lots in this area. Now this side of the boulevard is where the street bus so as you can see now we have a wall on the road and that is because Mr.Pablo Marin has a title to that piece of land that was the de-reserved and not only him I think there was about twenty eight lots that were surveyed on this boulevard and was sold to different persons. It’s a big concern first of all the city of Belmopan was a planned city and this as a boulevard was supposed to connect with George Price Boulevard. Now part of the boulevard being de-reserved and sold off as lots to persons that some of them paid what they called I think at that time we were told most of the people that bought land on this boulevard paid below market value, far below market value. But it is something that the previous administration was constantly doing. It’s not only the boulevard here but also the Almond Boulevard which we understand and we have a map to show that they de-reserved half of the boulevard as well and sold it as lots. A consistent effort by the previous administration City Council under the mayor Khaled Belisle to sell off anything that they could have found in Belmopan that was available. As a city we should have a plan to community, those reserves are for the future.”
