Belmopan Market Celebrates World Refugee Day in Partnership with UNHCR
Since two thousand one, the United Nations has been celebrating World Refugee Today. Today this celebration took place at the Belmopan market in partnership with the city council and the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR) to celebrate the courage of the asylum seekers who fled their homes. Aida Escobar, the Senior Public Information Assistant for UNHCR explained that refugees are commonly known to reside in the village, Valley of Peace. Escobar went on to explain that while the village is known to hold refugees, it is also known to be an area with high productivity in agriculture, something the country is known for.
The country currently holds around four thousand refugees who clearly contribute immensely to our community, despite it not being their first home.
