Belmopan Mayoral Aspirant Denounces Political Mudslinging: Responds to Cheap Shots in Campaign

The United Democratic Party’s Belmopan Mayoral Aspirant, Jacqueline Burns, says she’s staying away from the political mudslinging by her opponents. A banner with “Make Belmopan significantly corrupt again” under laid with headshots of Burn and UDP Belmopan Standard Bearer John Saldivar, who was designated and accused of significant corruption by the US State Department, grabbed the politician’s attention yesterday. Burn says the sign is a cheap political shot and explained why she believes it will help her campaign.

Jacqueline Burns, UDP Mayoral Aspirant:You know Lewis when I got involved in politics I did my training. I did an extensive training courtesy of UNDP. It trained women across political circles. This was one of the topics that we covered and of course being a woman in politics is always said to be tougher on the woman and we’ve been trained to I guess prepare ourselves for stuff like this. So I think I’ve thickened my skin enough with having been around politics for over ten years and I see it as child’s play because stuff like this doesn’t really win over voters. In fact it rather leaves distaste in people’s minds about how the political game moves forward.”

Reporter: So you think this kinda works in your favor almost ?

Jacqueline Burns, UDP Mayoral Aspirant: “I thank them. I really do. As I expressed on my Facebook page and the messages of support that has been coming, pledges coming in saying don’t worry about that Miss Burns we got you, people submitting names to our team to say we are in support of you guys we don’t appreciate this sort of politics in Belmopan.”

Belmopan’s Area Representative, Oscar Mira, responded to the UDP’s belief that they will regain political control of the capital city.  Mira also chimed in, saying that the banner that Jackie Burns took issue with, is meant to serve as a reminder to the Belmopan voters.

The banner noted, quote, “Make Belmopan Significantly Corrupt Again” with the background photos of John Saldivar and Jacqueline Burns
