Belmopan Resident Acquitted of Attempted Murder

Thirty-two-year-old, Belmopan resident Kareem Harvey was acquitted of a charge of attempted murder today. Harvey, who defended himself at trial, appeared in the High Court of Belize before Justice Nigel Pilgrim. During his summation, Justice Pilgrim said he had major concerns about the way police investigated the case. He noted that police did not interview Harvey’s alibi witness and that the prosecution provided poor identification of the suspected shooter during the trial. The prosecution’s main witness was the victim, 21-year-old, Jordan Murillo. Murillo testified that on the night of June 19, 2019, he was at a bus shed in Sandhill Village around 8:30 when a man who he claimed was Harvey, approached him, pulled out a gun, and opened fire. Murillo testified that, despite the pool lighting conditions in the area, he was positive that the shooter was Kareem Harvey, whom he had known for several months prior to the incident.
