Residents of the Cohune Walk Area of the City of Belmopan have voiced growing concerns over a nearby Belmopan Wastewater Treatment Plant. This point of contention is the very same sewer system that sits some 5 acres away from the proposed hospital site. According to one resident in the area, Sylvestre Trejo, the system emits a persistent foul odor, raising fears of potential health risks for those living in the area. It is a situation that the residents have reported to the authorities with no response.

Sylvester Trejo, Resident of Cohune Walk: “It stinks a lot, especially in the morning and when it rains. Heavy rains will mix up the ponds and then you smell stench. Months like November, December when we have north breeze blowing, it comes all the way over here. It’s been more than the second time that we have been, I would say more than three times that we have been doing this reporting on the news that the place stinks. There was a guy by the name of________ I don’t know if I could mention his name, but he did readings with a special equipment and the levels were far over what we should be ingesting or smelling.”
Cohune walk residents remain skeptical about whether or not this issue will ever be solved.
