Beloved mother, wife and community worker perishes after fall in the Cockscomb

Tonight, the family of 35-year-old Lucero Seleni Aguirre is mourning her loss after a tragic fall yesterday while hiking. Aguirre, her husband and some others participated in an outing early on Tuesday morning in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. The group had travelled for more than an hour and a half on the Tiger Fern Trail to see the beautiful waterfall. But it was on the way down, that Aguirre lost her footing and fell unto some rocks. She sustained serious injuries and by the time she got to the hospital, the mother of three was dead. The incident has sent shockwaves across Cowpen Village and the adjacent communities. Dale McDougall found out more about this community worker and friend.

In a statement this evening from the Belize Audubon Society, the co-manager of the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, they say that Tiger Fern Trail is closed until further notice. For its part, BAS says that is fully cooperating with investigators and it will conduct an assessment of the trails within the sanctuary.
