Benque Viejo Deputy Mayor Resigns Over Misogyny Allegations

Town Councilor of Benque Viejo, Jenny Martinez took to social media yesterday evening and gave a public verbal resignation as the deputy mayor.  Her resignation comes on the grounds of reported misogyny, indicating that there is a preference for a male deputy.  Her fight for the seat began right after the March 6 elections when the thought was that with the second highest votes she had earned the post of deputy. On March 19, she was given the post, but in a turn of events last week, the council is looking to re-appoint a deputy.  Love News understands that following a workshop with the Ministry of Local Government it was revealed that votes garnered do not indicate an automatic appointment.  This piece of information has triggered a motion to re-elect a deputy, a decision that Martinez took issue with.  Here is a byte from her social media video.

Love News spoke to the Director of Local Government, Clifford King, who gave us a breakdown of the procedures for electing a deputy mayor.

Notably, while Martinez has stepped down as the Deputy Mayor, tonight, she remains a town councilor for Benque Viejo del Carmen, Cayo District.
