Today we can unofficially tell you that Michael Peyrefitte will be the next Chairman of the United Democratic Party. Peyrefitte was being challenged by Dr Carla Barnett and John Castillo but the two backed out of the race, leaving Peyrefitte to be endorsed as Party Chairman. Peyrefitte will succeed Alberto August who is running for Deputy Chairman for the UDP. The delegate convention comes up on February 10. We asked Dr Barnett for a comment yesterday on her decision to step out of the race, but our requests went unanswered. Also coming out of the UDP race is Clifford ‘Boss P’ Peters of Dangriga. Peters had his name in for Deputy Chairman but according to the party, he has been too taken up with personal matters to launch a viable campaign. This leaves Khalil Belisle of Belmopan and the current party chairman, Alberto August vying for the seat of Deputy Chairman. As for the leadership race, it remains between John Saldivar and Patrick Faber. Immigration Minister, Beverly Williams, is on Saldivar’s team and we asked her to update us on the campaign.
Hon. Beverly Williams, Aspirant for Second Deputy Leader, United Democratic Party: “Confident, in one word very confident. I believe we can win and I believe we will win. We have a team approach and we do everything with the team involved. We will go to the delegates, we’ve reached out in group settings, we reached out in individual settings and we will continue to work with the delegates to ensure we advise them of what our plans and programs are moving forward and building on the legacy that Honorable Dean Barrow has left for us- for the party and the country.”
The convention will take place at the Belize Civic Centre in Belize City.
