Beware of contraband onions on the market

Maskall Village in the Belize District, Little Belize and Neuland Settlements in the Corozal District are the primary sources for onions in Belize.   Last Friday, the Belize Marketing and Development Corporation along with the Ministry of Agriculture Extension Service conducted the yearly Onion Availability Assessment where the three major onion-producing communities were visited.  According to the assessments, there is an estimated amount of 130,000 pounds of yellow onions in the fore-mentioned communities as well as San Carlos Village in the Orange Walk District.  A release from the Government of Belize notes that the farming communities have expressed concerns that contraband continues to be the major challenge in the marketing of onions. Onion traders, market vendors and the public are encouraged to support our hardworking farmers by purchasing local onions.
