BFLA comments on the death of Carolyn Arnold

The murder of 63-year-old Carolyn Arnold brought the circulation of a graphic photograph of her semi-nude body bleeding at the throat.  The gruesome attack coincided with International Women’s Month and has spurred disgust by several organizations.  One such entity is the Belize Family Life Association (BFLA).  The BFLA issued a press release expressing condolences to the family and condemning the circulation of the picture of her deceased body. The release says, quote, “Belize commemorates March as Women’s Month. It is a time that we bring awareness to gender inequality and discrimination, discrimination against women and the unequal treatment of women in our society. Women and girls in Belize remain the primary victims of gender-based violence and gender discrimination. Ms. Arnold is the most recent victim of violent death and violation of a woman. Her death is another example of the violence sexual and physical that women and girls continue to suffer.”  End of quote.  The release goes on to state that as a signatory to multiple treaties, Belize is required to exercise due diligence to prevent gender-based violence especially violence against women which includes investigating such acts and prosecuting and punishing perpetrators; and providing redress and relief to victims.
