Big Creek Port Owners Upset Over GOB Acquisition, Stann Creek West Rep. Remains Confident

Stann Creek West Area Representative Rodwell Ferguson says he believes the owners of the Big Creek Port will continue to support him despite lashing out over GOB’s acquisition of the Port of Belize. The Big Creek Group of Companies reportedly sent a letter to the Prime Minister, dated December 15, in which they expressed grave concerns over the competition that this acquisition will create for them.  Additionally, Director Zaid Flores, stated that not only did the Prime Minister renege on his commitment to not acquire the port, but he failed to consult them on government’s plans to purchase the facility.  Love News understands that the owners of the Big Creek Port are known supporters of the Briceno Administration which could create a political problem for the PUP.  The port does fall under the Stann Creek West division which made it crucial to get the views of Area Representative, Rodwell Ferguson.

Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport: “That’s a very good question. I believe I do because I have my own way of how to deal with my people in my constituency and they have a right to express their concern and their feeling about the port because they are a private port now competing with a government port. That was a decision by Cabinet that I cannot make any change, I can’t revert.”

The group also believes that the government should not have utilized public funds to cover its debt.
