A pre-litigation letter was submitted on behalf of the biological mother of the late Laddie Gillett. The mother, Linda Gillett, is seeking financial compensation for the wrongful death of the 14-year-old boy which occurred on Wednesday, July 14. The teenager was on vacation in Placencia Village with his adopted family when he was shot to death by a police officer. The officer, Corporal Kareem Martinez, was charged with manslaughter and has since been interdicted. The adopted family and close friends were outraged at the charge levied against the officer; but the mother says she was more concerned over the fact that she was not given access to her child when he was alive. In recent weeks she opted to seek financial compensation from the Belize Police Department. She had contracted Attorney Orson Elrington but later rescinded her request.
