The Blood Bank in Belize City has begun making preparations for World Blood Donor Day which will be celebrated on June 12 and 15. Adrian Martinez, Blood Bank Supervisor, explained that things will be different this time around due to COVID-19. They were to have their Bi-Annual General Meeting but due to the circumstances, it was canceled. According to Martinez, to honor their blood donors, they will be giving out promotional items as well as some snacks and drinks.
Adrian Martinez, Blood Bank Supervisor: “We basically have been adapting and the policies are still there so ever time a donor comes we ask them to sanitize their hand, we sanitize the table, the desks, everything they use the pen after and before each donation. The maximum of blood donors that can be in the establishment is three at a time so we just ask everybody to be very patient because a blood donation might take from thirty to forty five minutes. It’s 450 ml it might take fifteen minutes the actual blood donation however that blood donation will help three different persons at different intervals. The theme for this year is “Safe blood. Save lives.”, everything that is safe will definitely save a life. When it comes to safe it has to deal with a lot to things, its your life history, your travel history, the way how you eat your diet it has to be a lot so I like the theme for this year. The slogan is “Give blood so that you can have a healthy world.”
The event serves to thank voluntary blood donors for their blood and also to raise awareness for the need for regular blood donations. This year’s theme is “Safe Blood Saves Lives,” with a focus on the contribution an individual donor can make to improve health for others in the community.
