BNN Says Climate Crisis Response is a Community Effort

Belize continues to battle the effects of climate change and the effects are becoming very apparent along the coastlines of Belize’s cayes. Erosion is prevalent in several coastal communities and the continuous rising of the sea levels is rapidly swallowing the islands. This has been the recent area of concern for the citizens of Placencia, Seine Bight and Monkey River. The residents embarked on a reclamation initiative at the Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve. The Belize Network of NGOs issued a press release stating that while their efforts were admirable, it was carried out without the legally required permits. Senator for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Janelle Chanona stated that response to these crisis must be based on scientific research, legal grounds and involvement of the community in order to achieve maximum efficiency.

Chanona further stated that it is important for the community to support initiative geared at emphasizing the importance of maintaining and boosting the integrity of Belize’s blue and green ecosystems.
