BNTU Has Zero Tolerance for Disrespect Towards Members

The Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) is speaking out against the disturbing experience that one of their members had at her workplace. Joanne Ysaguirre published a video on her Facebook expressing that she felt victimized and attacked by management at St. Luke’s Methodist Primary School. The BNTU issued a press release stating that they will ensure that an investigation into the situation is conducted and that due process is followed to ensure that justice prevails. The BNTU calls on the Ministry of Education to carry out what is mandated by the law, which is to ensure that teachers are treated with impartiality and respect and to hold the management accountable for their disregard of the rules. The release further states that the mental health of teachers is an issue that has been ignored for too long and that the MoE needs to be more cognizant of the workload that the profession demands and that has been imposed on teachers. The union says that providing counselling to teachers is no longer an expense, but a necessity for the good of the nation. Additionally, the BNTU says that they stand resolutely with teachers against the abuse that exists in the Education system by some leaders. The union states that these unconstitutional actions of these leaders will not be tolerated.
