BNTU President Says Minister is Being Disingenuous

The Ministry of Education has proposed to add six additional days to the school calendar for the academic year 2015/2016. This is in order to make up the time that was lost when the teachers went on strike. Chief Education Officer, Dr. Carol Babb, announced yesterday that four extra school days will be added in January and two extra school days will be added in April. Education Minister Patrick Faber, in an interview with Love News on Wednesday made it clear that any extra time given by the teachers would be compensated but President of the Belize National Teachers Union, Luke Palacio, says they were not asking for any compensation because teachers had agreed that the time had to be made up.

The BNTU has not been consulted and that’s because both parties have not agreed on whom all should be part of the meeting.

Palacio told the media that they are more than willing to resolve the matter.

Ministry of officials will be meeting with the managements of secondary schools next week to present the proposal.
