BNTU to Challenge GOB’s Salary Cut in the Supreme Court

An application to the Supreme Court was filed by the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) yesterday surrounding the salary cut implemented by the Government of Belize. Come the next payday on June 15, public officers’ salaries will reflect the ten percent cut in salaries with the exception of those earning a thousand dollars or less per month. The salary cut was done by the government by way of an amendment to the Public Sector Emoluments and Allowances (Reduction) Regulations, 2021. Love News understands that the BNTU is seeking the court’s intervention by presenting several factors that may prove the cut as illegal, and subsequently getting the salaries restored. Some of those factors include the contracts signed onto by teachers upon employment as well as points in the Human Rights Convention. Our newsroom sought comment from the union President, Elena Smith but we were told that an interview will be given once the legal fine points are sorted out. We will follow this story and report to you as it develops.
