The body of an elderly woman was found partially nude in the Lake Gardens area of Ladyville, Belize District. The shocking discovery was made by a passerby early this morning as he walked past a dumpsite on a road near to the M&M construction site. The victim was identified as 63-year-old Carolyn Joan Arnold, a resident of the area. She was killed by a single cut wound to her upper body. Though she was found partially nude, Superintendent Alejandro Cowo stated that they cannot confirm sexual assault as yet until an examination of the body is done.

Supt.Alejandro Cowo, Head of Crimes Investigation Branch, Belize City Police Department: This morning at about 6:30 am police received information of a female body was sighted in a road in the Lake Garden area near the M&M construction site. As a result police visited the scene where they observed the motionless body of a female person lying face up on the street side with an apparent injury to the body. We are interviewing the family members at this moment so that we can establish the exact motive as to this incident as that is all the information that we have up to this time. We know that she resides in the Lake Gardens area by herself and the last time that she was seen was sometime last night by a friend when she left from her house. We have spoken to her family members and it is from them we are getting the information. We have also interviewed friends as she was last seen at a friend’s residence last night leaving from there at about 9pm.”

Reporter: Do you believe that this may have been a crime of opportunity ?

Supt.Alejandro Cowo, Head of Crimes Investigation Branch, Belize City Police Department: Well we are not sure as her belongings were found with her, at the scene police found a cellphone, a gold chain and her eyeglasses. Up to now we have not received any indication if she had any problem with anyone. We know that she works here in Belize City in the Belma area and then from there she leaves at about five or six daily and then she normally stops at a friend’s residence in the Lake Gardens area.”

Police believe that she was killed in the same area that she was found, which is a distance away from the nearest house.
