BPBL Honors Top Players Ahead of Finals With Season Awards

The Belize Premier Basketball League BPBL honored excellence within the league today by issuing awards ahead of the upcoming finals. Around 12 awards were given out at the Grand Resort in Belize City, including Most Valuable Player, Most Shots, Most Blocks, Coach of the Year, and Manager of the Year, among others. ECO of the BPBL, Gilbert Gordon, says that the league has worked hard to ensure its model provides the very best in sports for the fans and exposure opportunities for the players. He notes that with the tight competition seen throughout the more than 40 games played over the season, the BPBL has delivered on its objectives.

Dr. Gilbert Gordon, CEO, BPBL: “When we started the season in May 2016 our main objective was two, we had two objectives that we wanted to accomplish. One, to bring parity to basketball in Belize, also two to ensure that the teams that are taking part that they are able to compete. Today we’re celebrating both successes. One we brought parity in respect o the two teams that are going to be playing for the Benny’s Jaguar Cup. We’re talking about the San Pedro Tiger Sharks who are a big  market team and then now we have a medium/ small market team the Western Ballers will be playing for the championship. So when you look at that we created that parity within the teams so that you don’t know who is going to win the championship. Then the second one is to ensure that we bring that level in respect to ensuring that players, Belizean players, get that level of exposure in competitiveness. And so when we look at what we’re going to be offering today in respect to those individual awards every single award issued today is going to go to a Belizean born player. Although we had twenty eight players from outside within our league all the individual awards are gonna be issued to a Belizean born player. So we have seen that we have seen where now the overall competitiveness of this league.”

Game 1 of the Benny’s Jaguar Cup kicks off at the Belize Civic Center tomorrow night between the San Pedro Tiger Sharks and the Cayo Western Ballers. Game two will be held on Saturday, and if a game 3 is necessary, it will be held on Sunday, October 5.
