Yesterday, we told you that Elida Escobar’s position on the Belize People’s Front was rescinded a little over a week after it was announced that she would be running in Cayo Central. There was speculation that Escobar’s removal from the slate was due to falsified documents and dual nationality. Today, leader of the BPF, Nancy Marin, clarified the reason for their decision.
Nancy Marin, Leader, Belize People’s Front: “What made us make our decision was the fact that some people in some level of authority in Guatemala had reached out to us and in fact verified that there was a Guatemalan birth certificate. So even a dual citizenship would not really have meant anything because we have dual citizens that run for office here. We’ve had past Prime Minister, past leaders that do have dual citizenship but having two birth certificates from two different countries is something illegal, is something fraudulent. Now we are not assuming to know which one is real and which one is fraud but just the fact that these exist you know is contrary to the constitution, to the policies of the BPF. We are an anti corruption party, we started fighting all of these irregularities as a movement and we do want to get rid of these things in Belize so as much as I do personally like Elida I’m always looking for strong intelligent women to joint the BPF and you know I still believe that she has a lot to offer whether she decides that she wants to stay in Belize or be in Guatemala she has a lot to offer because she’s very intelligent but we cannot have her.”
Marin stated that despite this, she is still firmly against the bullying that Escobar received during the time she was on BPF’s slate.
