The PUP has also committed to assist Belizeans in other ways. According to Party Leader, John Briceno, if they are elected into power, they will help those who are severely affected by debt. Briceno outlined his plans during a virtual interview with the media.
Hon. John Briceno, Opposition Leader, People’s United Party: “Well I think that if the Prime Minister – he needs to look in the mirror to see who is the architect of the hardships that we are going through at the moment. COVID-19 only did – you know when the kids say the emperor has no clothes? Well COVID-19 just disrobed the government to point out all the deficiencies, all that has gone wrong under the UDP government. It was a government with no economic plan, they had no idea of what they were doing and that is why we are where we are today. When it comes to the issue of the banking industry everything is on the table. We will sit down with the banking industry and take a look at what is taking place, we will work close with the banks to see how is it that we can provide more relief to the people that have borrowed from the bank. The government also has to be more innovative and we are looking at how we can use the excess liquidity to be able to pass it on to the banks at very low interest rates that we can use to be able to help the viable businesses that need the help to be able to continue to be viable.”
