The Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno, has been on a listening tour in order to get the people’s position as it relates to taking Guatemala’s territorial and maritime claim on Belize to the International Court of Justice. The first leg of his tour took him to the south. This afternoon, Briceno told the media that the response from the majority of the people in the south was a reverberating no.
Leader of the Opposition John Bricenio: “Our leaders in the South were telling us that they believe that people in the South are saying no to the ICJ but what I also found out is that a lack of information. A lot of people have not received all the information to make a proper decision. I am not saying that with the information that they would change their minds but at the very least that if they have the proper information then they can make an informed decision as opposed to make an emotional decision. I have said it and I repeat it, I have all confidence in the collective wisdom of the Belizean people. I am calling out the government again that they are dropping the ball as they would say because they are failing miserably in the educational campaign. I think the basic concern we believe is that they are stake, that should it go wrong that they are first ones that are going to be handed over to Guatemala and then Foreign Minister did not help when he is talking about there is going to be refugees which is going to be ridiculous idea because I believe that there is absolutely no way that we would lose land per say but that’s another matter. They believe that they are in the front lines, they are the ones that are most vulnerable they believe and that is why they are saying no we do not want to take that chance.
Briceno added that the people fear that if something should go wrong they would be the first ones to be affected.
