The People’s United Party has maintained that the UDP led Government has no vision. In an interview with the media yesterday, Opposition Leader, John Briceno, spoke of the rise in the cost of living. He puts the blame squarely at the feet of Prime Minister Dean Barrow saying the nationalization of Belize Electricity Limited and Belize Telemedia Limited did not make things better for Belizeans. Briceno said the Government ended up paying too much for BTL.
John Briceno, Leader of the Opposition: “Again he could have controlled BTL through the Public Utilities Commission but because he wants to show that he is the baddest man in the land he then nationalized it illegally and for a company that he was claiming was worth less than a hundred million dollars we ended up paying five hundred and fifty seven million dollars and it does not end there. Now he goes to the house and then gives a sovereign guarantees for loans that BTL has to make. BTL is investing another $96 million on a project that will never pay for itself and who is paying that? It’s not the Prime Minister or the ministers in government it is we the Belizean people that are paying that and that is why we find ourselves that the government is scrambling for money, that the government is behaving as if they are on crack that they just have to find every which way to be able to increase taxes and collect more money from the Belizean people.”
Briceno said the Government is not doing all it can to ensure that the cost of fuel remains affordable.
