BSCFA and BSI/ASR Continue Negotiations for Upcoming Sugar Crop Season

After months of negotiations, the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) and Belize Sugar Industries/American Sugar Refinery (BSI/ASR) are yet to finalize an agreement for the new sugar crop season. The parties have been at an impasse since 2021 over a commercial agreement, particularly the price-sharing mechanism. The association and the miller are unable to agree on most things but had managed to sign a collective bargaining agreement that expires next month. Today, Minister of Agriculture Jose Mai, who is a member of the BSCFA, weighed in on the discussion and briefly stated that the talks are being accelerated.

Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture: “I think that on the crop, yes, that discussion has started already and it’s being accelerated. The discussions are being accelerated as we speak this week.”

Reporter: Any talks about an extension to the commercial agreement between the two?

Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture: “There has to be. There has to be.”

The news sugar crop season is set to begin in December.
