BSCFA Supports New Regulations, says it will ensure transparency
Another major point of contention at today’s press conference was the payment of Fairtrade. BSCFA’s Chairman of the Financial Committee, Javier Keme, says that contrary to reports the association does not need to have an active agreement with BSI/ASR to collect Fairtrade. Keme says the BSCFA produces more than fifty percent of the sugar sold to Tate and Lyle Sugar but didn’t receive a fair share of Fairtrade premiums. Keme says the new regulations would correct that issue by ensuring transparency.
BSCFA’s Chief Executive Officer, Oscar Alonzo, says he believes cane farmers are producing sugar that can be sold at premium rates.
