A release issued by the Belize Tourism Board notes, quote, “2018 was a very successful year for overnight tourism in Belize. There was a 14.6% increase in overnight arrivals in 2018, which translates to an increase of over 62,000 overnight visitors. The total overnight arrivals to Belize is now only about 10,000 short of reaching half million visitors for the year. In addition to this significant increase of 14.6%, the past three years have been all double digit increases. Furthermore, in the last 10 years, overnight arrivals have more than doubled in growth from 232,249 in 2009 to 489,261 in 2018.” End of quote. The board issued their statistics for 2018 which shows a booming industry for Belize. The figures come as no surprise as on October 29, 2018, Prime Minister Dean Barrow did sing praises for the players in tourism, boasting it to be one of the biggest revenue earners for the country.
Honorable Prime Minister Dean Barrow: “By the end of December the year on year increase will be just shy of 11%. This continues the record setting phenomenon of an unbroken stretch of year over year Belize Tourism growth with that growth being double digit for each of the last three years. With major new investments in hotel construction and additional air lifts as witnessed the direct flights from Mexico starting I believe next month and from Minnesota by December this trend is only expected to get better and it is the same story with cruise Tourism. As of September Cruise passenger arrivals are 19.9% over the same period for 2017.”
In 2018, total cruise passenger arrivals far surpassed 1 million visitors, with over 1.2 million cruise passengers arriving in Belize.
