BTB launches "Did you know" campaign

The Belize Tourism Board has embarked on the second phase of a campaign dubbed “Did you know”.  The campaign seeks to acquaint landlords, managers of resorts, hotels, and guest houses with the requirements that must be met before advertising one’s property in any marketing platform such as Airbnb. Love News spoke with Jacqui Santos-Locke, the Registrar of Hotels at the Belize Tourism Board who said that persons must register with the BTB.
Jacqui Santos-Locke, Registrar of Hotels, Belize Tourism Board: “Registration at the BTB is $25 application fee and $5 per room. There are in addition fees that you would have to pay to the agencies who would have to give you clearance to indicate that your property is fit for guests For example, you do need to get clearance from the fire department, from Central Building Authority, you also need to get clearance from public health. All of these clearances are mandated by law as to what is referred to as minimum standards regulation and this is all in order to protect destination Belize. You need to do a renewal annually and right now the annual date is December but the proposed change is October when we’re not at the height of the season that should come into effect by next year.”
Under the Hotels and Tourist Accommodation Act, any person who is caught contravening this law is liable to a summary conviction and/or fine, imprisonment or both. The campaign will run until March 2020. Persons can contact the BTB at 227-2420 or email for more information.
