Belize Telemedia Limited, BTL, has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as unlawful trespassing and attempts at intimidation at its Saint Thomas Street headquarters in Belize City earlier today. In a press release issued today, BTL says groups of protesters unlawfully entered its compound while opposing the proposed acquisition of Speednet Communications Limited, SMART, and its subsidiaries. While the company says it respects the right to peaceful and lawful protest, it maintains that some protesters crossed the line by trespassing on private property and resisting police efforts to remove them peacefully. BTL further alleges that the protest activity was aimed at disrupting a scheduled Board of Directors meeting, which was set to discuss routine business and other matters. According to the company, the unlawful occupation of its premises created an unsafe environment for employees, visitors, customers, and even the protesters themselves. BTL says such actions represent a clear violation of its property rights and a direct interference with its legitimate business operations. Despite what it characterizes as attempts at intimidation, BTL confirms that its Board of Directors did meet, addressing human resource matters, including issues connected to the Caribbean Court of Justice decision of November 5, 2025, which the company says will positively impact both former and current employees. BTL emphasized that its Board will continue to meet as scheduled and maintain its fiduciary duty to exercise independent judgment, stating that yielding to intimidation would be contrary to good corporate governance and the interests of shareholders. The company also warned that it will not tolerate unlawful trespassing or intimidation, noting that it is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure the safety and security of its staff and operations. BTL concluded by stressing that as an essential service provider, any threat to its operations poses a broader risk to national and economic security.
