Businessman John Zabaneh Accused of Intentionally Hiring Illegal Immigrants

On Thursday we heard from the Minister of Immigration, Eamon Courtenay who spoke on the issue of migration and employment. Minister Courtenay highlighted a troubling situation currently ongoing in Belize where employers are hiring undocumented migrants including children. He strongly warned businesses, especially those in the agro-producing sectors to not engage in these illegal employments. His warning comes on the heels of a major immigration raid that has now cramped a portion of the citrus industry. Last Saturday, immigration officials detained an estimated thirty-eight workers on a citrus farm, purportedly, belonging to John Zabaneh. Zabaneh’s situation reportedly worsened on Thursday morning when immigration conducted a raid just before five o’clock in the morning where all the farm workers were taken including children. Love News understands that the businessman has since denied engaging in child labour or human trafficking offences.
