Technical experts from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) are in the country to meet with government officials from the Ministry of Economic Transformation and the Ministry of Local Government. The bank is looking to inject some eight million dollars in several municipalities that would improve the drainage conditions in the low lying areas. Today, Dr Louis Zabaneh, Area Representative for Dangriga, led a team to inspect several areas.
Dr. Louis Zabaneh, Dangriga Area Representative: “To mitigate flooding which has become even worse with climate change this is something that our residents have been very clear about, that they want to ensure ah that we work on drainage, on canals, because this has become a recurring problem in the recent years. And this is what we’re working on now as we had already indicated that this project was coming on stream. Dangriga has a number of low-lying areas starting with the Rivas Estate near the Lakeland area. Also the first and second Site area, over across by the Bengushe area, Wagierale areas. So almost every area of Dangriga ha had adverse impact of flooding and we must make sure that we put in the right investments and that we do it properly, scientifically, so that we can really address this problem going forward for our residents.”
The areas to benefit from the CABEI funding would be Dangriga, Punta Gorda, Corozal and Orange Walk
