While we have reported on some crucial decisions coming out of Cabinet, there was much more that came out of this week’s discussions. In the area of trade, Cabinet welcomed the progress on a Partial Scope Trade Agreement with the Republic of El Salvador, following successful technical negotiations. The Agreement aims to enhance trade relations between the two countries. On the issue of land rights, Cabinet considered the Draft Maya Customary Land Tenure Policy. Suggestions for improvement were made, and further consultations with interested parties are expected before moving forward with legislation. Supporting the private sector, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises, Cabinet is backing the Movable Property Security Rights Bill, which will soon be introduced in the House of Representatives. The bill is set to foster growth and innovation. Cabinet also approved the modernization of regulations overseeing pharmaceutical products in Belize. The outdated Food and Drug Regulations will be repealed and replaced by a new framework ensuring the safety and efficacy of medicines. In an environmental initiative, Belize is transitioning to standards for biodegradable and bio-based products, aimed at reducing plastic pollution and its impact on the environment. A new digital system for the country’s criminal records registry will streamline the application process, making it easier for Belizeans to apply online and track their applications through email and SMS notifications. Records can also be conveniently collected in any district or delivered via email. Finally, Belize has assumed the Vice-presidency of the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE). As part of this leadership role, the country will sign a Joint Declaration alongside regional energy ministers to phase out coal-fired power plants in Latin America and the Caribbean.
