The Cal family of Maya Mopan in Belmopan is protesting the arrests of their relatives, 21-year-old Abelino Cal, 23-year-old Irvin Cal and 18-year-old Magdaleno Cal. The Cal brothers were charged following the assault and attempted murder of Police Constable Edgar Teul on New Year’s Day. Suficia Cal is sister to the men charged. She came to our news centre explaining that there is more than meets the eye in this situation.
Suficia Cal, Sister of Men Charged: “Daniel Cal came running into the football field with a machete according to my little brother Magdalino Cal, he was the one that wanted to attack him – Daniel Cal wanted to attack my brother Magdalino Cal that’s where the fight started. My two brothers came around again, which is Abelino Cal and Irving Cal, they saw who it started and they defended my little brother and right there is where Edgar Teul pushed himself. Instead of lock himself or make a phone call to the mobile he was part of the fight, that is where he got chopped. I went to speak with the OC in Belmopan which is Daniel Che, I went and told him why that person didn’t get charged and he told me because he was not in the fight, but he was there in the fight I saw, I looked at the video and I watched it good and there was Daniel Cal in the video with a red short pants and he was without a shirt. This is where I’m upset, why did both parties not get charged and sent to Jail ? The police are there to listen to both sides not only one side and what gets me upset is when I went to talk to the OC in Belmopan and I asked why they released Daniel Cal and he answered me telling me that he was not in the fight but the video showed it very clear that he was in the fight.”
The men have since been remanded to the Belize Central Prison. Their attorney, Hurl Hamilton is in the process of applying for bail for the men. The Cal and Teul families reportedly have a history of violence with each other. Love News understands that they both had signed an agreement through the court to keep the peace.
