Calaney Flowers’ Sentence Suspended: Now a Free Woman After Pleading Guilty to Manslaughter

Calaney Flowers is a free woman after Justice Derrick Sylvester suspended the remaining five years of her sentence.  The ruling came down this morning that Flowers is to serve ten years after she pleaded guilty to manslaughter.  Having served five years on remand, the judge decided to have the additional five years suspending, meaning she no longer has to serve time in prison.  Today’s judgement is a retrial stemming from a 2012 incident when Flowers rammed her vehicle into the cycle that her ex-partner, Lyndon Morrison was driving.  Morrison died and his girlfriend at the time, Sochyl Sosa, was severely injured.  The matter had gone to trial and ended in an acquittal in 2017 on the charges of murder and attempted murder.   Shortly after, the DPP appealed the verdict but her appeal was denied in 2019 by the Court of Appeal.  The DPP did not let up, and furthered her request for a retrial to the Caribbean Court of Justice which was approved.  That retrial was to commence today, but it was short lived when Flowers entered a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to manslaughter.  The backstory to this case stems back to August 28, 2012 when the victims were on a Suzuki motorcycle on Freetown Road near Atlantic Bank and were hit from behind by Flowers’ vehicle.  Flowers, who is now 37-years-old, had served time on remand from 2012 to 2017 when she was acquitted.
