The John Smith Road has become well known for the numerous dead bodies that have been found along its stretch. However, the road‘s bad reputation may soon be a thing of the past, because the police have installed surveillance footage on the road to deter criminals from operating in the area. It’s an initiative that the public has been clamoring for, and, according to Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, it’s thanks to funding from the Belize Tourism Board. Here’s how the ComPol explained the department’s latest crime-fighting effort.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “As you would know we were embarking on a project to install cameras on John Smith Road as well as San Pedro. I can say now that we have installed a number of cameras on San Pedro as well as John Smith. So John Smith Road is fully covered by camera now and so we should be able to have good coverage on that very important piece of road. BTB has been very instrumental in terms of assisting the police as well as the community in putting up these surveillance cameras particularly in San Pedro. We have also gotten some contributions from residents of San Pedro and we’re hoping that with time we should be able to continue to add to the system and we’ll be able to have the entire San Pedro Town under surveillance by cameras that we are installing.”
