Fem Cruz, Cayo Correspondent: The month of October is being observed as Cancer awareness month. This month is set aside to remember those that passed away and to encourage and support those that are fighting this killer that we call cancer. Love News spoke to Luke Ramos the president of the Cancer Society Belmopan Branch who told us about the activities planned for Belmopan.
Luke Ramos, President, Belmopan Cancer Society: “Yes the activities for the Belmopan Cancer was going to be two fold. One fundraising we have a wear pink day, we also have a wear pink ribbon daily as well as we have a virtual walk as well as the donation boxes which we have out in the communities. We’re encouraging members of the community to get involved in these activities. The big one is the wear pink day where we’re asking the government ministries as well as Social Security Board who has joined us to wear pink on Friday one or more Fridays for the month. On the awareness time we’re going to be having several things on our Facebook page I want to encourage members to keep in touch with our Facebook page which is simply the Belize Cancer Society Belmopan Branch, there they’ll be able to see on a regular basis updates on what we are doing during the month. As well we want to thank those who already have joined us particularly the Social Security Board and the Government Ministries who have joined us already in making breast cancer awareness month a success.”
Fem Cruz, Cayo Correspondent: Beverly Swasey spoke to Love News about breast cancer.
Beverly Swasey: “The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month which was started by the World Health Organization. So we are observing this month with activities and this morning I spoke about what causes cancer, what is cancer, some ways we can screen and prevent cancer and one of the main ways to prevent cancer is to eat right, think right have a certain level of spirituality and symptoms and signs that you can look for for example sores, bleeding, secreting, foul smelling liquids and discoloration in the shape of the breast look out for things like that and see that you exercise daily because cancer like some other chronic diseases are lifestyle diseases so eat right and exercise.”
