Almost a dozen canoes were confiscated from Santa Cruz residents in the Orange Walk District. The Belize Police Department held an operation in the village yesterday in an attempt to stop persons from going across the river to buy contraband. The Prime Minister, Dean Barrow spoke on the events that prompted the operation.

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister of Belize: “Commissioner conducted an operation yesterday and removed a number of canoes that the people have already sort of pre-positioned at various landing areas so that they can go across the river and bring back with them not just Corona beer but coronavirus. So Madam Speaker we got to keep repeating to these people that better must be done and of course later on we are going to be introducing and hopefully passing today increased penalties for these border jumpers and for those who facilitate and enable them.”

We also spoke to the Chairlady of Santa Cruz who stated that the canoes are used for their livelihood and were taken in an unjust manner.

Border jumpers have been an issue in the Northern and Western districts and the security forces are working tirelessly to minimize this illegal act.
