Caribbean College of Surgeons Holds 21st Annual Conference in Belize

Surgeons from across the Caribbean are in Belize this week for the 21st annual conference of the Caribbean College of Surgeons. This year marks the first time Belize is hosting the conference. President of the College of Surgeons, Belizean-born Shamir Cawich, explained that the three-day conference gathers the best and the brightest in their respective fields. Cawich said that hosting the conference in Belize presents an opportunity for local surgeons to learn, share, and strengthen their networks within the region.

Shamir Cawich, President, Caribbean College of Surgeons: “The Caribbean College of Surgeons is a professional association of all surgeons from across the English speaking Caribbean. And we come together once a year to share ideas and to have educational sessions to benefit the region as a whole.”

Reporter: Tell me a little bit about who we have in the house today.

Shamir Cawich, President, Caribbean College of Surgeons: “You have in this room we have about 175 to 200 surgeons that span across all specialties of surgery basically anything that is needed from a surgical point of view, if the guys in this room can’t do it, it can’t be done. This is a conference that spans over three days, over four days really, and it has two facets. The first facet is that the Caribbean College of Surgeons usually identifies patients who need help in the local territory here in Belize that you know help that may not be available, subspecialty help and while we’re here we reach out to the local hospitals and local governments and say we are here, we are willing to help and as an example we had a day of operating at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital on Wednesday where we helped patients with difficult cancers that needed to be removed and otherwise would not have been possible locally.”

Love News also caught up with Dr. Lisa Johnson, Dean and Assistant Professor at the University of Belize’s Faculty of Health Services at the conference. Johnson explained that the conference being held in Belize is a testament of the work the country’s surgeons are doing to better themselves.

Dr. Lisa Johnson, University of Belize Faculty of Health Services: “This organization was formed to promote the practice of all surgical disciplines within the Caribbean and to promote professional integrity and advances in the practice of surgery and what we as a region provide for our populations.”

Reporter: This conference is being held in Belize for the first time. Let’s talk about the significance of that.

Dr. Lisa Johnson, University of Belize Faculty of Health Services: “Well, it confirms our presence within the Caribbean. It confirms that we have within this country surgeons who are interested in networking and having collegial relationships and exchange relationships with surgeons in other parts of the Caribbean. It confirms and recognizes that we as a region are important to one another and that the way that we serve any individual serves their patients and serve their communities is to make sure that we are involved in organizations and with people who have the highest professional standards, who are interested in the advancement of the practice, and who are also prepared to recognize individuals for their contributions and services to their community.”

The conference ends tomorrow.
