CARICOM Social Security Leaders Meet on Free Labor Movement and Benefits Reciprocity

Heads of Social Security Organizations of CARICOM member states have gathered in the Bahamas to discuss furthering the free movement of labor in the region. The meeting is centered on member states working together to allow for the reciprocity of social security benefits under the CARICOM Single Market & Economy. The discussions look at the challenges, opportunities, and benefits of standardizing the exchange of information among organizations. Yesterday, we spoke to the Chief Executive Officer of the Social Security Board, Leroy Almendarez, who is representing Belize. He explained the importance of the three-day event and what it seeks to achieve.

Dr. Almendarez further spoke about the main areas of significance for Social Security Boards in the region, particularly when it comes to keeping contributions in line with payouts.

Under the CSME, nationals of CARICOM member states do not need to obtain a work permit in the member state in which he/she desires to work.
