The sparsely populated northernmost region of Caye Caulker saw the opening of El Ben Cabanas, a resort that could very well influence more development in the area and in turn attract more investors to the tourism sector of Belize. Evan Tillett, Director of the Belize Tourism Board, attended the opening ceremony and had this to say.
With the closing of the borders in 2020, the tourism sector experienced challenges and great losses. Moreover, some Belizeans even lost their jobs or faced salary cuts. Herold Ovares, the general manager of El Ben Cabanas, explained what the resort offers to benefit Belizeans.
Evan Tillett also stated that development and investments such as El Ben speaks volumes for the tourism industry in Belize, especially during a time when the industry was decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic. He said there is always a need for diversification in respect to the tourism product so investments such as these are welcomed.
