A Caye Caulker resident is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being charged with stealing two sacks full of pint bottles from a man’s yard. Twenty-three-year-old Ashton Young appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, charged with two counts of theft. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail for a thousand dollars plus one surety of the same amount. However, Young was found to have an outstanding fine of over six hundred dollars from a previous conviction and needed to pay off his fine before he could post his bail. However, he was unable to clear his bill and has been remanded until he can do so. Young is due back in court on February 29, 2024. Allegations against him are that on December 12, he entered the yard of Emilion Novelo on two separate occasions and carried off the sacks. In court, Young said that it was just a misunderstanding because a friend had permitted him to take five sacks of bottles. He contends that he mistakenly went into the wrong yard.
