Caye Caulker Villagers Petition Against Amalgamation into Fort George Constituency

A group of villagers from Caye Caulker have launched a petition to reject the idea of being amalgamated into the Fort George Constituency. The move comes after the leaked Redistricting Exercise indicated that the island would be removed from Belize Rural South and added to the Belize City Division. The Islanders hope to collect seven hundred signatures over the weekend and deliver them to the Election and Boundaries Commission on Monday. Attorney Wendy Auxillou, one of the concerned citizens, says that the initiative seeks to protect and preserve the island’s values and its resident’s way of life.

Auxillou says she believes the attempt to have the islanders vote in another division that is traditionally a stronghold for the People’s United Party is a clear-cut sign of gerrymandering.
