Ambassador Joy Grant is leaving office as the Central Bank Governor come the end of March. While Love News had confirmed that the governor had reached an agreement with the Government on her exit package the Briceno administration was yet to make an official announcement. In speaking with the Minister of State for Finance, Christopher Coye, our newsroom confirmed that there is an appointed Governor in waiting.
Christopher Coye, Minister of State [Finance]: “I don’t think that a new Central Bank Governor has yet been appointed. Ambassador Grant is still the governor that we have. My understanding is that the governor will demit office by the end of this month and then a new governor will be appointed immediately thereafter. The expectation is that it will be Mr.Manuel Vasquez.”
Vasquez had previously worked with the Central Bank of Belize as well as with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Love News understands that the next Central Bank Governor is appointed by the Governor General upon the advice of the Prime Minister. As for Governor Grant, she was appointed as head of the Central Bank of Belize in October 2016 under the Barrow administration after having served as Senator and Cabinet Minister.
