Chanek VO.

Chanek’s plea of manslaughter accepted

24-year-old Gilberto Chanek , who was initially charged with the murder of 50-year-old Carlitos Valdez, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter when he appeared before Justice Colin Williams this morning.

24-year-old Gilberto Chanek , who was initially charged with the murder of 50-year-old Carlitos Valdez, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter when he appeared before Justice Colin Williams this morning.  Chanek pleaded guilty to the charge after Crown Counsel Riis Cattouse amended the indictment to read manslaughter instead of murder.  The court accepted Chanek’s guilty plea.  Senior Crown Simeon Sampson, who is representing Chanek, requested that a psychological evaluation be conducted before the court pass sentence. Consequently, Justice Williams ordered a mental health status report to be completed by January 27, 2020.  Thereafter, Justice Williams is expected to pass sentence on 30 January 2020. The incident occurred on the night of August 3, 2018, when the accused entered the room of Valdez and stabbed him with a knife eight times. The commotion alerted other persons in the home who rushed to the room where they found Chanek with a knife and covered in blood. Chanek attempted to flee but was apprehended by a police officer who also resided in the same building. Valdez died from the injuries that he sustained.
