In the moments following the death of Jesus Sacul, chaos erupted in front of the Northern Regional Hospital. His family and friends began hurling large rocks and glass bottles at police officers who arrived at the hospital. The group reportedly became enraged after they learn Sacul had died and lashed out at the cops. Fortunately, the incident did not result in any injuries, and the Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says no one will be charged for the attack on the Police.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “There was an issue at the Northern Regional Hospital in the aftermath of the passing of the young man. Police were called, we had sent additional police from Belmopan to Orange Walk to assist last night. And from what I observed on the footage, it shows that the police did exercise great restraint in the circumstances. We were able to hold the area until the crowd decided to disperse without any incidents. So I think that that is commendable on the part of the police. No, we have not and I don’t think we’re going to arrest anybody unless if there is some damage to property and the hospital authority would have reported to the police, then we would have to investigate and then who needs to be charged would be charged. But as of now, there have been no reports.”
The protest and displays of anger were brief, and within an hour the crowd had dispersed. ///
